Our Area - Christchurch

Christchurch is New Zealand's second-largest city and the gateway to the South Island. Bordered by hills and the Pacific Ocean, it is situated on the edge of the Canterbury Plains that stretch to the Southern Alps.

Christchurch and its' people have suffered enormously over the past years with the first earthquake in September 2010 causing significant damage to the City and the central Canterbury Region. The second earthquake rocked the city in February 2011, this time causing 185 fatalities and severely damaging the City and Eastern Suburbs.

Over 140,000 homes were damaged, many of which were already structurally weakened by the first earthquake. The Opt Out Programme has been introduced for Canterbury homeowners who do not want their repairs managed under the Earthquake Commission’s Home Repair Programme. Now homeowners are able to receive a cash payment to pay for contractors to carry out repairs between $15k and $100k.  Smith and Sons offer home renovation services to homeowners who have chosen to Opt Out.

Christchurch is a place where its residents continue to enjoy a healthy, active lifestyle amidst a natural environment world-renowned for its beauty. The City has always had a cosmopolitan ambience and now this is combined with a new force – many loyal and passionate people with energy driving the rebuild. New businesses and buildings are emerging and there is a new pride and excitement amongst many Cantabrians about the future of the City, its’ new plans and designs.
